not so safe

I was starving for information about the area I would be moving to in Oakland, so I joined a google group about it. This morning I get to work and check my email and this is what I see.
"The ### building had a garage break in on the night of July 24th-25th (not sure when exactly). Two cars had a window smashed and one had spark plugs damaged so the owner couldn't start the car. The cars with smashed windows both had a bunch of stuff inside in view - one had some things stolen, the other didn't.
The thief also tried to gain access to our lobby by prying open the lobby door but the door and lock held."
Seriously, who damages a spark plug? I wouldn't expect a lot of intelligence from a petty thief but really. A friend of mine told me to buy some pepper spray and some good insurance. Sounds like solid advice.
